Rita Cooney

Woundcare Specialist Nurse
& Nurse Educator

...

I graduated Ro become RN in 1982 after training in a smallish hospital in Broken Hill, NSW in Australia. It was a wealthy mining town at the time (not so much now) and as nurses, we were exposed to lots of illnesses and surgery. From there I spent two years at Royal Melbourne hospital working in haematology and burns unit.

Back to Broken Hill to do midwifery training which I absolutely loved and continued to work in for many years eventually becoming an antenatal educator in Kalgoorlie WA.

Due to various moves with my husband’s work, I had many different work experiences including working at a high school in Bristol UK. Which was an eye opener and taught me a lot about the development of children and that is is often the naughtiest that needs the most love and understanding!

Again, due to my husband’s work I needed to find a job that suited family hours and ended up working in aged care. Which at the time was considered a step backwards in the role of a nurse but to my amazement I found I loved it and recognised that it an extremely valuable and rewarding work place (as long as working conditions were right, that of course will vary with each work place!)

In that workplace I developed my fascination with wound care and enjoyed learning and practicing new techniques in healing.Primarily,as in all aspects of health care the need to treat the whole person is pivotal in all care.

I am passionate that people FEEL cared for, as I believe that that is when the healing will start!
